NUEVA ESPAÑA

NEW SPAIN

During almost three centuries of Spanish domination, musical production in the colonies lived through a period of splendour equal to that of European music.  It was mainly music linked to religious life, frequently compositions dedicated to representing the deepest human sentiments.

In these cases, exactly as what happened on the other side of the ocean, the ancient Spanish collections of songs such as the Cancionero del Palacio, inherited from the renaissance and the baroque human tone, provide the popular verses which, put to music, reach us today through the flowering of popular themes such as the Son Huasteco and the Son Jarocho.

This singular music, which rooted in the renaissance and the baroque became the Central and South American musical language, now reaches us, in an imaginary return voyage of the caravels, to restore for us the very precious image of how we were, helping us to understand how we are now.
